A letter to Melinda Gates

Dear Melinda,

If you are in front of me, I would give you a big hug if you let me.

No, you don't know me and I only know you through news and your book - A Moment of Lift.  Thank you for all you have done and share your experience with us.

I am saddened by the news that you are divorcing.  My immediate reaction to my friend was, "if two smart people can't figure it out, what hope do we have?"

Now several days have passed.  Unlike other news, your divorce is lingering in my mind.  Today, I would like to say to you, "Thank you again, Melinda, for having the courage and do what you believe is the right thing to do even though it is incredibly tough".

It's not about money.  It's about equality.  It's not about compromising.  It's about standing up for yourself.  What you did gave me hope and courage.  If we are to be equal to man, we start from our own house.

Your children are lucky to have such a thoughtful mom.  Happy Mother's Day!

Sincerely,

Valerie

Fitbit Customer Service

Most of you probably have encountered endless waiting in line, being put on hold forever when face with customer service representatives.  Sometimes the ending was good, they solved your problem and perhaps went way and beyond your expectation.  Sometimes somehow we lost the patience and gave up, or the phone somehow got disconnected.  Sometimes, you get serviced, but the result was totally not what you have expected.  😞 I will be talking about the later. Two (three?!) years ago, I ran out of time and idea for Christmas presents for the near and dears.  In the end, I got everyone a Fitbit, a fitness tracking watch.  I heard good things about it, cheaper than Apple watch (& I don't have iPhone), and it was available at Costco.  I couldn't believe it, but my husband and I, whom do not wear watch, have been wearing the watch since. The merry story became even more promising, after it gave me a three month free-trial for Fitbit premium.  Since it...

Breville BES870XL vs BES920XL

I love coffee.  Well, let me take it back.  I like to drink coffee, but I am in no way a coffee connoisseur and I definitely don't demand using fresh coffee beans only.  In fact, to "save money", if I am to buy coffee at Starbucks, I always get a venti size and refrigerate or microwave coffee if I couldn't finish it in time, which is, almost always the case. I believe I started drinking coffee around end of high school, university time.  In the cold weather, I like to hold something warm and hip something warm constantly.  Sounds like what most people would like to, right?  Right.  The only drawback is the frequent, very frequent visits to washroom.  😨 So much so I believe I secretly hold the Guinness world record of most washroom visits for any human beings. In 2011, I bought a second hand DeLonghi Magnifica 3500 Espresso Machine on a Craigslist for 400 USD.  It worked hard and it worked well.  Unfortunately, after being wi...

Google Project Management Certificate

Several of Google's professional certificates went online at Coursera in March 2021.  That same week, I also started my internship with an early startup company.  All the sudden, I went from deciding what to do next to sleep deprived.  Life is like that, isn’t it?      For those who just want to know if it’s worth it without further reading, what I can tell you is that I finished 5 out of 6 courses in a two month span and I enjoyed it very much.      Let me backtrack for those of you who are going to read more.  Google certificates are designed for anyone, with or without degree, with all walks of life.  Anyone who could spend about 10 hours a week for six months should be able to obtain the certificate.  While I am not sure how much the industry would value Google certificates, the fields such as project manager, UX designer and data analytic are certainly in demand.  Upon the completion of the certific...
